Fortification History
Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I expanded the fortress in the thirteenth century, integrating Byzantine substrates. Shipyards, cisterns and arsenal zones supported naval control of the Cilician gates.
Kızıl Kule and Harbour
The Red Tower guarded the naval arsenal; today it hosts ethnographic exhibits. Harbour walls frame pleasure craft markedly different from medieval galley berths.
Visitor Experience
Cable cars and winding roads access the citadel; interior lanes pass ruined mosques and Ottoman residences. Sunset viewpoints draw photographers nightly.
Conservation
UNESCO tentative lists and municipal restoration programmes stabilise walls against salt spray and earthquake risk.
- Wear walking shoes for cobbled ramparts
- Carry water — shade is limited on wall walks
- Combine with harbour fish restaurants after descent
